Syrtos Agnostos

History

A Greek dance from the island of Santorini.

Rhythm

The dance is in a slow-quick-quick rhythm, split 2-1-1.

Version One

I learned this from Anne-Lise Kryger in 2010.

Start in a line in a W hold, facing right.

Take three steps forward, starting with the right.
Step forward with the left, then step in place with the right and left while turning to face centre.
Step across in front with the right, step to the side with the left, then cross behind with the right while turning to face right.
Step back with the right, then close with the left and with the right.

Version Two

I learned this from Cindy Kelly in 2010.

Start in a line in a V hold, facing right.

Take six steps forward, starting with the right, while slowly bringing the arms up to a W hold.
Turning to face centre step across in front with the right, step to the side with the left, then cross behind with the right while turning to face right.
Step back with the left, then with the right, then close with the left, all the while lowering the arms into a V hold.

Music

From an unknown workshop CD.

The dance can begin at the start of any musical phrase.
